What Is PTFE?

Glass-Filled PTFE (15-25% Glass)

Adding glass fiber reinforcement dramatically improves mechanical strength, creep resistance, and wear resistance while maintaining most of PTFE’s chemical resistance. The most common grade for excavator piston seals in standard construction applications.

Carbon-Filled PTFE (15-25% Carbon)

Carbon filling improves thermal conductivity, wear resistance, and compressive strength. Preferred for high-speed applications and environments where heat dissipation is important.

Bronze-Filled PTFE (40-60% Bronze)

Bronze filling provides maximum load-bearing capacity and thermal conductivity. The preferred grade for heavy-duty mining and quarry excavators where piston seals experience extreme loads. Used in premium hydraulic cylinder seal kits for demanding applications.

PTFE Backup Rings: Protecting Rubber Seals from Extrusion

Beyond piston seals, PTFE is widely used for backup rings — components that prevent rubber O-rings and seals from extruding into gaps under high pressure. PTFE backup rings are essential in excavator hydraulic cylinders because:

  • Excavator systems operate at 250-350 bar — pressures that will extrude unprotected rubber seals
